Cumberbatch gives a sensational performance.

Benedict Cumberbatch leads this Cold War thriller as a spy trying to put an end to the Cuban Missle Crisis with the help of a Russian source. Co-stars Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel).

It is a true-life spy thriller, the story of an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Courier delivers a rousingly effective old-school spy adventure elevated by a thrilling fact-based story and Benedict Cumberbatch’s nervy central performance. (Critics Conesus, Rotten Tomatoes)

An elegant exercise. The direction has style, while the story has substance, and not a little wit.
